Defining
the term
Ex Nihilo
ex ni·hi·lo. /ˌeks ˈnēhəlō/ means, according to Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary, from or out of nothing
But can anything really come from nothing? As creatives, any work we do starts with an idea, a thought, an inspiration. But the work itself, the material, comes from something. We may stare at a blank canvas, screen, or paper and feel that we are starting from nothing. However, only our GOD can and did create EVERYTHING in the universe ex nihilo, “out of nothing.”
The Bible begins with these well-known words in the book of Genesis: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
The Gospel of John starts with these words: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.”
As Christian artists, our most successful works are those that begin with a surrender to the One who truly creates ex nihilo.
